Speech-Mentorship-Life Skills
Active Speech was created by Speech-Language Pathologist, Matt Souza to help serve a population that lacks therapeutic opportunities as they venture in to adolescence and adulthood. Active Speech was created for teens and adults with Autism and other disabilities to help them reach their full potential and continue to build upon their communication skills in a variety of functional settings throughout their communities. Active Speech provides services to individuals in the Merrimack Valley area of Massachusetts (Haverhill, Methuen, North Andover, Andover). For a detailed description of our services and mission, please navigate our website to learn more about our programming.
Individual therapy opportunities are tailored to client-specific needs with flexible scheduling and are also available via Zoom.
Group therapy opportunities will connect you with similar peers in order to address social pragmatics and build interpersonal skills.
Clients will learn a life-long hobby while also working on conversation skills, problem solving, and executive functioning.
Clients will meet at local coffee shops/restaurants where they will work on social pragmatics amongst similar peers/community members.
It is currently very difficult for parents and families to locate appropriate services for their adult-aged and adolescent family members who have communication disabilities. Many individuals have lost valuable therapy time due to the change in service delivery and decreased opportunities since March 2020. As a Community-Based SLP, my goal is to provide individualized and functional speech-language therapy for adults and adolescents with communication disabilities. Traditional, clinic-based speech therapy is not 100% effective or motivating for adults and adolescents, and my practice will focus on teaching/developing life-long communication skills in my clients’ communities. Treatment plans will be developed between clients and clinician, with the primary goal being to provide the client with the communication, vocational, and life skills necessary to be independent and successful members of their community. Clients will have access to both individual and small group therapy sessions and will be provided consistent opportunities to practice their skills in real-life situations, with all sessions being client-centered. While the main duty of an SLP is to provide therapy to address communication skills, clients working with a Community-Based SLP can also work on problem-solving, life skills, money skills, social pragmatics, and executive functioning.
